Introduction

The Governance theme of the Orange-Senqu River Awareness Kit is designed to provide an overview of Water Governance in terms of Transboundary Water Management, specifically within the Orange-SenquRiver basin. The theme is structured to provide an overview of the main concepts and issues related to Water Governance, before looking specifically at the situation in SADC and the Orange-Senqu River basin. The topics of the chapters are:

• Key Definitions relevant to the subject of water governance
• The principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
• The principles of Transboundary Water Management
• Transboundary Water Management in the regional context of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
• Water Governance in the Orange-Senqu River basin
• The Stakeholders of IWRM and their roles in the Orange-Senqu River basin
